Integrated Infrastructures & Processes (including Open Data)

Significant and as yet insufficiently tapped value is offered by integrating the various existing and new infrastructure networks within and across cities – be they energy, transport, communications or others – rather than duplicating these needlessly. This point applies, both, to active and passive infrastructure. Many such infrastructures are ageing; budgets to replace them are stretched; they are procured and managed ‘in silos’; yet the potential afforded to cities and their customers through new joined-up approaches, exploiting modern technologies is substantial. This is achievable; however it will take sustained commitment from multiple parties to access value.

Some actions (this is only an example) on integrated infrastructure may focus on:

  • Intelligent lighting
  • City Information Platforms
  • Shared infrastructure planning
  • Transforming the Energy Chain
  • Road systems
  • Intelligent multi-modal transport solutions
  • Parking systems
  • Urban Mobility
  • Peer to peer transport information
  • Waste-4-Heat
  • Adverse Events

Outcomes of the AC Meetings 2016

The Integrated Infrastructures & Processes Action Cluster Meeting on 22nd November 2016 focused on the Urban Platforms Initiative. The session started with a plenary session on the introduction of the set-up and goals and a revision of progress. The tangible materials delivered to date by the Initiative were showcased during the session.

One of the highlights was the need for alignment with the European Commission’s investment in SCC01 Lighthouse Consortia. During the afternoon, cities (demand side) and industry (supply side) were divided into separate groups to draft the action plan for the following months. These plans were then joined up in a “Joint Forward Plan”.

In for the future, the governance group and stream leads will develop the action plan into a more practical schedule of future work. There is no question that what has been already done is valuable and deserves application. All the members will now continue to progress to additional value-adding materials that will help increase market adoption towards the goals of the Urban Platforms Initiative.
