Basic description: 
One of the bigger concerns today in our cities is the air quality. The European Union has declared 2013 as the Year of the Air Quality. The main cause of environmental pollution is caused by traffic and taxis are a great part of the traffic. SmarTaxi is an application to improve the network operation forecasting the taxi demand around the city. It shows with a heat-map where the demand is in real-time, the amount of waiting time for each taxi stops and also shows a graph of the next 24h with the best hours to work in order to allow the taxi driver to make a better schedule. It will reduce the amount of kilometers drove looking for clients, what means a reduction of the traffic and the resultant pollution. It will make shorter the citizens waiting time without the need of any actions from them.
It uses the location data from the taxis, where is picking or dropping a client, which areas covers looking for clients without finding any, where taxis are continuously going in order to identify events around the city... Server programmed in PHP and Python with large amounts of sent and received information on real-time (Big Data) establishing connections between the data by no relational databases. The information of the server is treated and returned with R language. It combines genetic algorithms to build the structure, artificial neural networks to learn comparing the real outcome with the expected, and algorithms of local optimization to improve the learning process.
Business model: Public-Private/ Private-Private partnership. Low monthly fee with no deployment cost.
Suitable city context (including governance, spatial layout, climate, end-user involvement) : 
The suitable size of the city for our application will be medium or big and should have at least 100 taxis.
Energy supplied or savings expected: 
We estimate that the taxi driving looking for clients will be reduced around the 30%. Reducing the fuel consumed and the resultant CO2.
Expected impact on GHG emissions : 
The expected reduction of emissions will be around the 30%. For example, the kilometers per day drove by taxis looking for clients are around 70. In Madrid the 5% of the fuel is consumed by taxis. There are 15.708. Applying the 30% of driving reduction all these taxis would avoid about 329.868 km per day with the resultant save of 63.334 kg of CO2.
Wider potential expected benefits for cities: 
The wider utilization of SmarTaxi will improve the taxi sector efficiency and network operation. Less vain kilometers drove by taxis, less traffic and a reduction of the fuel and pollution.
Additional requirements on deployment: 
In order to implement SmarTaxi it is needed to raise the awareness of the taxi drivers. The requirement is to have a smartphone with internet connection. After downloading the application it can be used immediately. Additionally agreements with fleets can be done to improve the precision.
