The Smart Cities and Communities lighthouse projects are funded by the European Commission through the HORIZON 2020 research and innovation programme, with the aim of bringing together cities, industry and citizens to demonstrate solutions and business models that can be scaled up and replicated, and that lead to measurable benefits in energy and resource efficiency, new markets and new jobs. Since 2017 a total of 14 projects have been funded and are currently ongoing from 5 different calls, being all of them driven by the same challenges that EU are facing to ensure secure, affordable and clean energy, smart electro-mobility and smart tools and services, always showcasing their economic viability towards ensuring their replication potential in other cities.
These 14 projects represent a total of 40 lighthouse cities and 53 follower cities, working to demonstrate these processes, technologies and business models to transform their ecosystems into smarter and more sustainable places.
Under this framework, the event EUROPEAN SMART PROJECTS SUMMIT is being organised in the city of Donostia/San Sebastian in the Basque Country.
European cities forerunners in the transition towards a low carbon and resource efficient economy will show their experiences working for the improvement of the quality of city life and the attractiveness as environments, actions addressing the building stock, energy systems, mobility and ICT’s. The event aims at the key challenges for Smart and Sustainable cities bringing economic, social and environmental impacts, resulting in a better quality of life ( including health and social cohesion) competitiveness, jobs and growth.
