Description

The company aims to design and implement an integrated citizen participation platform, where citizens within the boundaries of a Municipality can report their problems, complains, suggestions and issues. Ultimate goal is the emergence of an alternative communication route between public administration and citizens, the fostering of active citizen involvement, as well as the exploitation of users' collective knowledge towards the buildup of more effective and transparent public procedures.

SMARTS commits to contribute in several areas always inline with the general direction and the overall goals of the Partnership. To this end, SMARTS is committed to utilize the resources necessary for innovative, low-energy and effective ICT solutions to emerge in the context of smart cities environments. In greater detail, the company aims to design and implement an integrated citizen participation platform, where citizens within the boundaries of a Municipality can report their problems, complains, suggestions and issues. Ultimate goal is the emergence of an alternative communication route between public administration and citizens, the fostering of active citizen involvement, as well as the exploitation of users' collective knowledge towards the buildup of more effective and transparent public procedures. Additionally, among the main objectives of SMARTS is the deployment of an end-to-end sightseeing and navigation touristic service, targeting users seeking for points of interest, information for events and alternative activities within the geographic boundaries of selective areas. The goal is not to simply present touristic information, but to provide an integrated sophisticated tour guide on the one hand and to support local businesses on the other. Finally, SMARTS aims at building a transport guide for facilitating users in their daily navigation in cities while utilizing public transport. Crowdsourcing techniques, open data, incentive-centered design, gamification patterns and augmented reality technologies will proved the technical means for the deployment of the platform. Ultimate goal is the provision of transport information based on: i) users' preferences and input (via their mobile devices) ii) specialized requirements (parking spots available, route optimization e.t.c.), iii) live users' feedback (about vehicles' condition or latencies) and iv) context information (weather and traffic conditions e.t.c.).

SMARTS commits to contribute in several areas always inline with the general direction and the overall goals of the Partnership. In more detail, the company will invest on open/big data to support its causes and will base its working international standards and communication protocols. Widely used data formats and standards (Open311, GTFS e.t.c.) will provide the basis of all underlying workings. The products of SMARTS will become available in the form of web and mobile applications. Moreover, integration with existing infrastructures (traffic and weather sensors, traffic lights and public transport) when possible will enable SMARTS to avoid unnecessary infrastructure deployment. Overall, SMARTS is focuses in smart cities, since it is evident that they can be transformed to the major source of European economic activity and innovation.

SMARTS commits to partner with public and private transport, ICT and energy entities in order to build intelligent multi-modal transport, touristic and citizen participation solutions and applications. Each of these partners will contribute to selective areas of the underlying projects, based on their expertise. Finally, all foreseen products (as described in previous steps) refer to integrated and sophisticated solutions where the convergence of ICT, energy and transport domains is evident.

i) SMARTS will enforce private and public sectors collaboration, and will offer integrated and sophisticated tools in the domains of citizens’ participation, mobility and tourism
ii) SMARTS is already in the process of building and refactoring all the necessary infrastructures and will be in position to initiate particular implementation activities upon the formation of possible Actions Clusters.
iii) Possible key-performance indicators for measuring the progress of SMARTS' commitment could be : a) percentage of geographical coverage concerning focus areas, b) percentage growth of present open datasets, c) percentage of population involved, d) number of different apps e) percentage of interoperability for existing infrastructures.
