Explore, Shape & Deal: Joint SCIS & EIP-SCC Newsletter
No Images? Click here Explore, Shape & DealJoint SCIS & EIP-SCC NewsletterWelcome to the first edition of the joint SCIS & EIP-SCC newsletter. Who are we? The Smart Cities Information System (SCIS) is a Smart City knowledge platform to collect and exchange data and experience and to spread lessons learned and best practices. The European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities (EIP-SCC) brings together cities, industries, SMEs, investors, researchers and other smart city actors to create new Smart City opportunities and investments. During the last couple of months, we have always labelled SCIS and EIP-SCC as two sides of a coin. Yet, we wonder if that was actually right. Aren’t we more like pieces of a puzzle that, only together, make a whole? By joining forces in our combined newsletter, we become a resource for change makers, smart city enthusiasts, citizens and politicians who seek to provide an energy efficient and climate friendly urban environment with a high quality of life for everyone. Moreover, we are not only joining forces newsletter-wise! You can look forward to a lot of joint input from both sides at this year’s Nordic Edge in Stavanger at the end of September. And we have strong support: With the first woman ever to be elected President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen appears to be putting climate change at centre stage, aiming to make Europe the “first climate neutral continent”. Noting that public funding is not enough, she aims to turn parts of the European Investment Bank into a dedicated climate bank. And channelling investment into climate and clean energy projects to all parts of the EU, of course, chimes well with the EIP-SCC and SCIS! And this is where the circle closes: stories, best practices and data from SCIS – investment, industry contacts and matchmaking from EIP-SCC. Hold this thought while you are on holidays – watch the clouds wherever you are and you might see more than one circle! The SCIS and EIP-SCC teams salute you, the readers of our first joint newsletter. We are looking forward to what the future holds in store for us, the Smart City community, Europe and the world! Sign up! Merge of SCIS & EIP-SCC NewslettersCongratulations, you clearly have signed up to the joint SCIS & EIP-SCC newsletter. But how about your colleague sitting next to or across from you? How about your project partners, family and friends? Please don’t hesitate to forward this newsletter and make sure she or he clicks here to sign up for the new SCIS&EIP-SCC Explore, Shape and Deal Newsletter to be informed about all Smart City related news from now on. Nordic Edge – The Place to BeThere are many reasons for travelling to Norway this fall. This year’s Nordic Edge Expo and Conference, taking place from 24 to 26 September, is definitely one of them! So what is in store here for the Smart City enthusiast? Haitze Siemers (Head of Unit, Directorate General for Energy) will speak about the Horizon Europe Cities Mission. SCIS & EIP-SCC will be at the conference with a joint stand, offering information on all EU funded Horizon 2020 Smart City projects as well as related initiatives. There will be a joint SCIS/EIP-SCC/EC stakeholder engagement session on the Horizon Europe cities mission. The main outcome of the session will be fed back directly into the mission board of the Cities Mission. This is your chance to influence and make your voice heard! Moreover, there will be an informal Get Together for the wider SCIS/EIP-SCC and European Smart Cities and Communities Lighthouse Projects (SCC1) community: Do I hear DRINKS?! Stay tuned to our twitter channels (SCIS and EIP-SCC), our events section as well as the next joint SCIS&EIP-SCC newsletter for exact timeslots and locations. Finally, one of the first three SCC1 projects, Triangulum, will celebrate its international conference “Energising Cities: Innovations, challenges & solutions” in Stavanger from 23.-24.09.2019. On Monday, 23.09., they will kick off the Nordic Edge week with presentations by their Project Coordinator as well as European Commission representatives. In the morning, two high level Key Notes by Steve Turner and Martin Brynskov will set the mood for an afternoon full of interactive sessions and topics like climate change, governance, citizen engagement and investment & replication. Make sure to arrive to Stavanger a day earlier and join Triangulum to learn from five years of experience and their Smart City journey. Did we mention it is completely free? More info and registration at the Triangulum website. New Tender: Intelligent Cities ChallengeEASME, the Executive Agency for SMEs, has just launched a new tender, the Intelligent Cities Challenge. Through the Digital Cities Challenge (DCC) tender, which had been initiated in October 2017, EASME was able to empower already 41 European cities to become digital and to achieve strategies for smart growth and industrial modernisation using advanced technologies. Given the great success of the Digital Cities Challenge, EASME decided to go one-step further and therefore launched the Intelligent Cities Challenge. Kozani - Here We Come!Remember our SCIS roadshow call? We asked you to nominate your Smart City and the SCIS team will then organise a one-day roadshow with you, including presentations. Today, we are delighted to announce that our first roadshow will be taking place in Kozani, the City of Books in Greece on 19/20 September 2019. Kozani, Follower City of Stardust, is planning to hold a two-day conference focusing on “Coal Just Transition”. The SCIS team will be there hosting a Smart City session. Read more about the roadshow in the next edition of our joint SCIS & EIP-SCC newsletter “Explore, Shape and Deal”. Research and Innovation Missions for Cancer, Climate, Oceans and SoilInspired by the Apollo 11 mission to put a man on the moon, the European R&I Missions aim to deliver solutions to some of the greatest challenges facing our world, such as cancer, climate change, healthy oceans, climate-neutral cities and healthy soil and food. At the occasion of the Informal Council for Research Ministers in Helsinki, Finland, Commissioner Moedas announced the appointment of five prominent experts to chair the mission boards, which will propose targets and timelines to design the specific missions. Digital Health Europe Project: Call for TwinningThe Digital Health Europe project has recently issued a call for twinning which aims at facilitating the transfer and implementation of digitally enabled innovative practices from one region to another. Given the tremendous impact that built environments have on people’s health and well-being, we thought some of the EIP-SCC partners might want to integrate projects for the digital transformation of health and care in their own initiatives. If so, the ongoing call for twinning is the perfect opportunity to build on the knowledge existing in other European regions.
